Mayer have been the leading researchers on emotional intelligence. In their influential article Emotional Intelligence, they defined emotional intelligence as the ability to monitor ones own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide ones thinking and actions. A Brief History Emotional intelligence as a term didnt come into our vernacular until around 1990. Despite being a relatively young term, interest in the concept has grown tremendously over the last 20 years. Early Growth As early as the 1930s, however, the psychologist Edward Thorndike  described the concept of social intelligence as the ability to get along with other people. During the 1940s, psychologist David Wechsler proposed that different effective components of intelligence could play an important role in how successful people are in life. Later Developments The 1950s saw the rise of the school of thought known as humanistic psychology, and thinkers such as Abraham Maslow focused greater attention on the different ways that people could build emotional strength. Another important concept to emerge in the development of emotional intelligence was the notion of multiple intelligences. This concept was put forth in the mid-1970s by Howard Gardner, introducing the idea that intelligence was more than just a single, general ability. The Emergence of Emotional Intelligence It was not until 1985 that the term emotional intelligence was first used by in a doctoral dissertation by Wayne Payne. In 1987, an article published in  Mensa Magazine, Keith Beasley uses the term emotional quotient. Some suggest that this is the first published use of the phrase, although Reuven Bar-On claims to have used the term in an unpublished version of his graduate thesis. In 1990, psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer publish their landmark article, Emotional Intelligence, in the journal  Imagination, Cognition, and Personality. In 1995, the concept of  emotional intelligence  is popularized after the publication of psychologist and New York Times science writer Daniel Goleman’s book  Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. The topic of emotional intelligence has continued to capture the public interest since, and has become important in fields outside of psychology including education and business. Components Salovey and Mayer proposed a model that identified four different levels of  emotional intelligence, including emotional perception, the ability to reason using emotions, the ability to understand emotion, and the ability to manage emotions. Perceiving emotions:  The first step in understanding emotions is to perceive them accurately. In many cases, this might involve understanding nonverbal signals such as  body language  and facial expressions.Reasoning with emotions:  The next step involves using emotions to promote thinking and cognitive activity. Emotions help prioritize what we pay attention and react to; we respond emotionally to things that garner our attention.Understanding emotions:  The emotions that we perceive can carry a wide variety of meanings. If someone is expressing angry emotions, the observer must interpret the cause of the persons anger and what it could mean. For example, if your boss is acting angry, it might mean that he is dissatisfied with your work, or it could be because he got a speeding ticket on his way to work that morning or that hes been fighting with his wife.Managing emotions:  The  ability to manage emotions effectively  is a crucial part of emotional intelligence and the highest lev el. Regulating emotions, responding appropriately, and responding to the emotions of others are all important aspect of emotional management. According to  Salovey and Mayer, the four branches of their model are arranged from more basic psychological processes to higher, more psychologically integrated processes. For example, the lowest level branch concerns the (relatively) simple abilities of perceiving and  expressing emotion. In contrast, the highest level branch concerns the conscious, reflective regulation of emotion. Examples There are many examples of how emotional intelligence can play a role in daily life. Being able to put yourself in someone elses shoes. A large part of emotional intelligence is being able to think about and empathize with how other people are feeling. This often involves considering how you would respond if you were in the same situation. People who have strong emotional intelligence are able to consider the perspectives, experiences, and emotions of other people and use this information to explain why people behave the way that they do. Considering a situation before reacting. Emotionally intelligent people know that emotions can be powerful, but also temporary. When a highly charged emotional event happens, such as becoming angry with a co-worker over some type of conflict, the emotionally intelligent response would be to take some time before responding. This allows everyone to calm their emotions and think more rationally about all the factors surrounding the argument. Being aware of ones own emotions. Emotionally intelligent people are not only good at thinking about how other people might feel; they are also adept at understanding their own feelings. Self-awareness allows people to consider the many different factors that contribute to their emotions. Testing A number of different assessments have emerged to measure levels of emotional intelligence. Such tests generally fall into one of two types: self-report tests and ability tests. Self-report tests are the most common because they are the easiest to administer and score. On such tests, respondents respond to questions or statements by rating their own behaviors. For example, on a statement such as I often feel that I understand how others are feeling, a test-taker might describe the statement as disagree, somewhat disagree, agree, or strongly agree. Ability tests involve having people respond to situations and then assessing their skills. Such tests often require people to demonstrate their abilities, which are then rated by a third party. If you are taking an emotional intelligence test administered by a mental health professional, here are some of the measures that might be used: Bar-Ons Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i):  A self-report test designed to measure competencies including self-perception, decision making, stress management, self-expression, and interpersonal relationships. The test is available to professionals who are qualified to use the assessment.Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT):  An ability-based test that measures the four branches of Mayer and Saloveys EI model. Test-takers perform tasks designed to assess their ability to perceive, identify, understand, and manage emotions.Emotional and Social Competence Inventory (ESCI):  Based on an older instrument known as the Self-Assessment Questionnaire, the ESCI involves having people who know the individual offer ratings of that person’s abilities in several different emotional competencies. The test is designed to evaluate the social and emotional abilities that help distinguish people as strong leaders. There are also plenty of  more informal online resources, many of them free, to investigate your emotional intelligence. The goal of these initiatives is not only to improve health and well-being but also to help students succeed academically and prevent bullying. Clearly, being emotionally intelligent is important, but what steps can you take to improve your own social and emotional skills? Here are some tips. Listen: If you want to understand what other people are feeling, the first step is to pay attention. Take the time to listen to what people are trying to tell you, both verbally and non-verbally. Body language can carry a great deal of meaning. When you sense that someone is feeling a certain way, consider the different factors that might be contributing to that emotion. Empathize: Picking up on emotions is critical, but you also need to be able to put yourself into someone elses shoes in order to truly understand their point of view. Practice empathizing with other people. Imagine how you would feel in their situation. Such activities can help you build an emotional understanding of a specific situation as well as develop stronger emotional skills in the long-term. Reflect: The ability to reason with emotions is an important part of emotional intelligence. Consider how your own emotions influence your decisions and behaviors. The Unexpected Presidency of Gerald R. Ford

Becoming vice president or President of the United States are no small feats. But between 1973 and 1977, Gerald R. Ford did both—without ever getting a single vote. How did he do that? Finally, he promised his wife Betty that if the speakership eluded him again in 1974, he would retire from Congress and political life in 1976. But far from returning to the farm, Gerald Ford was about to become the first person to have served as both Vice President and President of the United States without being elected to either office.   Suddenly, its Vice President Ford In October 1973, President  Richard M. Nixon  was serving his second term in the White House when his Vice President  Spiro Agnew  resigned before pleading no contest to federal charges of tax evasion and money laundering related to his acceptance of $29,500 in bribes while governor of Maryland. In the first ever application of the vice-presidential vacancy provision of the  25th Amendment  to the U.S. Constitution, President Nixon nominated then House Minority Leader Gerald Ford to replace Agnew. On November 27, the Senate voted 92 to 3 to confirm Ford, and on December 6, 1973, the House confirmed Ford by a vote of 387 to 35. One hour after the House voted, Ford was sworn in as Vice President of the United States.   When he agreed to accept President Nixons nomination, Ford told Betty that the Vice Presidency would be a nice conclusion to his political career. Little did they know, however,  that Fords political career was anything but over.   The Unexpected Presidency of Gerald Ford As Gerald Ford was getting used to the idea of being vice president,  a spellbound nation was watching the  Watergate scandal  unfold.   During the 1972 presidential campaign, five men employed by President Nixons Committee to Re-elect the President had allegedly broken into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington D.C.s Watergate hotel, in an attempt to steal information related to Nixons opponent, George McGovern. And I said, Betty, I dont think were ever going to live in the vice presidents house.   With his impeachment almost certain, President Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. The couple moved into the White House without ever living in the vice presidents house.   As one of his first official acts, President Ford exercised Section 2 of the 25th Amendment and nominated Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York to be vice president. On August 20, 1974, both Houses of Congress voted to confirm the nomination and Mr. Rockefeller took the oath of office December 19, 1974.   Ford Pardons Nixon On September 8, 1974, President Ford granted former President Nixon a full and unconditional presidential pardon absolving him of any crimes he might have committed against the United States while president. In a nationally televised TV broadcast, Ford explained his reasons for granting the controversial pardon, stating that the Watergate situation had become â€Å"a tragedy in which we all have played a part. It could go on and on and on, or someone must write the end to it. They are responsible for managing the business of healthcare at a facility, or within a department of a facility. Their job duties can vary, depending on their level of management, the size of the facility, their level of education, and work experience. Healthcare administrators play an important role in healthcare services.Most healthcare administrators have at least a bachelor’s degree, and many have a master’s degree as well. In addition, although it is very rare to pursue it, there is also a Ph. D. available. There are some bachelor’s degree programs online, and even more master’s degree programs. This is because many administrators gain some experience in the field, before deciding on a master’s program. Therefore, an online degree is designed to accommodate working individuals, as well as give them the opportunity to immediately implement their new knowledge in the workplace (Guide, 2012).The typical college courses required to obtain a degree in healthcare administration include hospital organization and management, accounting and budgeting, human resources administration, marketing, strategic planning, health economics, law and ethics, and health information systems (Bureau, 2012). Master’s degree programs, which usually have a competitive admissions process, also include a one year residency in a medical facility (Health, 2012). There are many different settings in which someone with a degree in health services administration can be employed.These places are hospitals, physicians’ offices, dentists’ offices, home healthcare services, other practioners’ offices, outpatient care centers, ambulatory healthcare services, medical and diagnostic labs, and nursing and residential care facilities. Nursing home administrators must also b e licensed through the state. Requirements for licensing vary from state to state but, in order to obtain a license, one must also pass an exam, and be under supervised practice for a set period of time.As well, they must complete continuing education classes to keep that license valid (Guide, 2012). The Nursing Home Administrators State Board of Examiners regulates these licenses (Health, 2012). The job duties of healthcare administrators can vary depending upon their position and the facility of employment. Generally, they are responsible for improving the efficiency and quality of healthcare services, by implementing and creating policies and procedures, and in connection with that, must stay up to date on new laws and regulations.They hire and supervise staff in their department or facility, create work schedules, and keep organized records of services. They may manage the finances, such as, patient fees and billing, and ordering necessary supplies. They must also effectively co mmunicate with medical staff, other department heads, and higher ranking administrators (Bureau, 2012). Sometimes healthcare mangers are required to travel, for meetings, conventions, or to oversee other affiliated facilities (Guide, 2012).Health services administrators usually work a full-time schedule, forty hours a week, or more. They may be required to work days, evenings, midnights, and weekends, because the facility they are employed at may operate twenty-four hours a day. Typically, entry-level administrators work forty to fifty hours a week, while senior level administrators may work over seventy hours a week. Managers may also be called in during an emergency situation (Guide, 2012). The median annual wage for health services administrators is about $85,000.The amount of money earned varies by level of management, type of healthcare service provided, and the size of the facility. Lesser paid managers make about $50,000 per year, while high ranking mangers make up to about $ 150,000 per year (Bureau, 2012). The need for healthcare administrators is expected to grow by about twenty percent over the next ten years, faster than any other occupation. Factors that contribute to this are, the aging baby boom generation, and people living longer. As the demand for healthcare grows, so does the need for someone to mange that increasing demand (Bureau, 2012).Healthcare administrators play a key role in the effective and efficient treatment of patients.
